Nasir Bin Olu Dara Jones a.k.a. Nas was born September 14th 1974. He played the trumpet at age four, and began writing rhymes by age nine. In 1992 MC Serch of 3rd Bass became Nas’s Manager and landed him a record deal with Columbia Records. in 1994 Nas dropped his first solo album, illmatic. The Source Magazine gave the album Five Mics and is known throughout hip hop as a classic.

The track “One love”, produced by Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest contains samples of the Heath Brothers‘ “Smilin’ Billy Suite Part II” (1975) and Parliament‘s “Come In Out the Rain” (1970). The lyrics are like a string of letters to his friends in jail, letting them know what’s going on while they are locked up. This song has a personal meaning for me. When one of my best friends went to jail, I wrote him a letter using the Nas “One Love” format. I wonder if that letter is still around?

Nas “One Love” is one of my favorite hip hop tracks of all-time and is highly appropriate as first installment of my new weekly post “Reminisce Wednesday”.

I know you already own the album illmatic, but if for some reason, you don’t, here’s the link to purchase and download, Nas | illmatic
