Funk Master Flex comes through with a tough mix in celebration of Jam Master Jay’s 47th  birthday, January 21st. Born Jason William Mizell, he became DJ to the groundbreaking rap group Run DMC, started the Label Jam Master jay Records and put out Onyx’s album Throw Ya Gunz. He also created the Scratch DJ Academy educating the people about DJ’ing and producing. Jam Master Jay and Run DMC were the first rap group to go mainstream and paved the way for future hip hop acts to come. Jam Master jay is a  hip hop pioneer and legend. Please pay tribute to a legend on the game, a  true KING.

There are some moments when I regret leaving San Diego in 1998 to pursue a degree in photography. The beginning of the hip hop era in San Diego was just taking off. Dj Mike Czech and Dj H.O.P. have been putting down the Strictly Hip Hop shit for many years. This is one of their early collabs entitled “Neck Exercize”. I feel lucky to know these two cool dudes and have gotten the opportunity to photograph them as well. Sleeping Giant Music has dug deep in the crates and made this mixtape the first of it’s new weekly posts entitled Rewind Wednesdays. I can’t say “Don’t sleep on this mixtape” since it was released over a decade ago. But feel lucky that you can cop it now.

Some projects are just perfect for a particular season of the year, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find a new release better for the spring, and the arrival of warm weather that comes with it, than Clean Ass Whip, the new mixtape from Bay Area do-it-all Prince Aries. Self-described as West Coast Cruising Music, Clean Ass Whip skips from track-to-track, delivering a carefully selected and deftly mixed collection of old school classics and brand new exclusives that were made for listening to with windows down, car stereo speakers blasting.

To give the project an added, personal touch, Aries dug through the crates of his own vinyl collection, with much of the vinyl (song selections ranging from Too $hort to Concious Daughters, and more) coming from the artists themselves, as Aries spent time interviewing them for Distortion 2 Static, the hip-hop TV program he co-founded shortly after moving from NYC to the Bay. “As far as the mix itself, it’s just a refection of myself as a DJ,” says Aries. “I feel like it had everything a good mixture needs. Exclusive tracks, remixes, blends, drops, rare singles/b-sides/album cuts and classics. And put together in a way that can be played easily from beginning to end.”

The 808 Experiment is an annual compilation produced entirely by SMKA. In just three years the series has become a popular, and anticipated, project in the hip-hop community. The strength of the series rests on the range of the artists, as well as the quality and variety of the music. What started – in 2008 – as a local mixtape (Winner of Creative Loafing’s Best Local Mixtape of the Year) to highlight Atlanta MC’s, The 808 Experiment quickly expanded to incorporate talented artists from all across the US. With so many talented artists throughout the hip-hop community, we felt the project would suffer if we limited ourselves to one city. Each year we hope to work with a new group of artists who are among the most talented in their respective areas. The 808 Experiment: Vol 3 is the continued evolution of the series, and this year we wanted to showcase a cross section of hip-hop. The free compilation features nearly 40 different artists, and truly demonstrates the range and talent of producer 808 Blake of SMKA.

The first time I heard music from A Kid Named Dom McLennon was on The Beat Tape, Volume #1 Presented by @IvanRott at HipHopIsRead.com. I really liked the two tracks that were on that tape, “Anon”, and “Liberty City”. So one day I decided to reach out to Dom McLennon and he reached back. Turns out he’s a real cool dude from Connecticut with a very eclectic taste in music, and a thoughtful outlook on life. He’s working on a new album called “1992″ and this is the first single entitled “Down”. I like it a lot and I think you will to. He produced and rhymed on this track and is definitely representing real so have a listen, and support this young artist coming up.
